Our Story
In early 2008, I (Matt) was pursuing the path of an orchestral percussionist/timpanist - learning excerpts and taking auditions. I was starting to become increasingly frustrated because, in addition to having to play the same bits of (old) music over and over again, I had questions for the composers that I couldn’t ask them. I kept wondering what might be different about their parts if they had talked to, or better yet, worked alongside their performers.
In March of the same year, I took an audition with the San Antonio Symphony, and then hustled back to UT Austin to hear Sō Percussion talk about traveling around the country making music with and by friends. I remember thinking in that moment, “What have I been doing? This is the answer.” We set up the first lul collective concerts in Austin in the fall of 2008, premiered two new commissions as a quartet in early 2009, solidified as a trio in early 2010, and Adam, Cullen and I have been making music as line upon line ever since.
